Our story begins in our Minnesotan backyard tending to our family’s cabbage garden. Our family would spend time preparing the cabbage, radish and onions to make kimchi for our family gatherings, always making sure grandmother approved of the quality and taste.
Yon immigrated from South Korea as a teenager with dreams of starting a life in the U.S.A. Over the years she formed a friend group of other South Korean immigrants in which they would come together to share food and stories. Yon’s Kimchi was a staple at these events and soon became a popular request amongst friends of friends. After outgrowing all the space in her kitchen for all her friend’s kimchi jars, she decided to start a small business and make Kimchi available for everyone. Since 2003 Yon has spent her days making sure each jar of her kimchi on the shelves would have her mother’s approval. Yon’s Foods is located in Burnsville, Minnesota and now Yon’s Kimchi can be found in the produce aisle of most local grocery stores.
